Use named ranges in your formulas as much as possible.  Dynamic named ranges are preferred.  A named range can be a combination of cells or a single cell.  Limit or eliminate all together, links to other Excel workbooks. Develop your workbooks so that you do not need to change formulas as the underlying data changes; you should never change a formula because you are in a new reporting month.  Think smart. Use VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) to automate your Excel files.  Many people call VBA macros.  When using the Excel on-sheet controls (CheckBoxes, drop-down lists, command buttons,etc.), go with ActiveX controls as much as possible and minimize or eliminate the use of Forms controls.
